Summary

To all the world, Alizeh is a disposable servant, not the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom forced to hide in plain sight。

The crown prince, Kamran, has heard the prophecies foretelling the death of his king。 But he could never have imagined that the servant girl with the strange eyes, the girl he can’t put out of his mind, would one day soon uproot his kingdom—and the world。

Clashing empires, forbidden romance, and a long-forgotten queen destined to save her people—bestselling author Tahereh Mafi’s first in an epic, romantic trilogy inspired by Persian mythology。

THIS。 This book is EXACTLY what I have chasing after a while。I have been in a book slump for a bit, but this book was so intricately created and had the perfect elements to master an enchanting tale。 This Persian Cinderella retelling was not beautiful, but stunning (if you understand what I mean 😉)。 I had some complaints at first with the pace, but when it started to pick up about half way through was when it really captivated me。 The amount of screaming I did was ungodly💀💀The characters? Maybe this is more of a 3。5/3。75 but i'm still :/ Alright。 Do I think anything happened in this book? No。 Did I enjoy it? I’m surprised I haven’t seen this marketed as a Cinderella retelling because the nods to that story are very clearly present in this book。 That being said, the Persian inspired world is still highly original and beautifully crafted。 Mafi’s prose is sumptuous and her characters fiery。 The banter between the main characters gave me Elizabeth and Darcy vibes in the best way。 This was a book I didn’t want to put down, and I think this will be a very popular series。 I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next I’m surprised I haven’t seen this marketed as a Cinderella retelling because the nods to that story are very clearly present in this book。 That being said, the Persian inspired world is still highly original and beautifully crafted。 Mafi’s prose is sumptuous and her characters fiery。 The banter between the main characters gave me Elizabeth and Darcy vibes in the best way。 This was a book I didn’t want to put down, and I think this will be a very popular series。 I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next installments! 。。。more

While it's true that it had taken me more than I would have liked to fall in love with this book, I did fall in love with it。 My biggest problem with it had been that it was the first in a trilogy, and it isn't even out yet。 I fell in love with the world, and I am more than ready to dive into the rest of the story to find out how it ends。 I need more Alizeh and Kamran moments, I don't think there were enough of them here! For my full thoughts on the book, check out my review here While it's true that it had taken me more than I would have liked to fall in love with this book, I did fall in love with it。 My biggest problem with it had been that it was the first in a trilogy, and it isn't even out yet。 I fell in love with the world, and I am more than ready to dive into the rest of the story to find out how it ends。 I need more Alizeh and Kamran moments, I don't think there were enough of them here! For my full thoughts on the book, check out my review here 。。。more

I received a copy of this ARC from YALSA, THANK YOU!✭ 5/5 I cannot imagine a better book than this。 This book is going to define the rest of 2022。 This book set the bar so high for any other fantasy series that will be published。 I didn’t know what to expect going into this book, but after reading the author’s note and discovering that Tahereh Mafi largely used Persian mythology in the writing of this novel, I was excited。 I don’t think I have read a mythological-inspired novel that was bad。 The I received a copy of this ARC from YALSA, THANK YOU!✭ 5/5 I cannot imagine a better book than this。 This book is going to define the rest of 2022。 This book set the bar so high for any other fantasy series that will be published。 I didn’t know what to expect going into this book, but after reading the author’s note and discovering that Tahereh Mafi largely used Persian mythology in the writing of this novel, I was excited。 I don’t think I have read a mythological-inspired novel that was bad。 The best parts of this book you may ask? The prose, the romance, the banter, and MULTIPLE POV! Let’s break it down:tThe prose in this novel was unbeatable。 The writing style was so unique to a YA book。 It almost reminded me of Shakespeare (crazy but hear me out) in the way that it was romantic and flowed so seamlessly and elegantly together。 But it wasn’t boring to read! And while you knew the characters were talking in an elegant and flowing way, I still picked up every meaning behind their words。 tAlso the banter! It was AMAZING。 I absolutely fell in love with all the characters。 (Omid was definitely one of my favorites)。 tThe world-building was beautiful and complex as well。 At some points it was confusing (as any magical fantasy can be), it was by far one of the easiest to fall into。 Tahereh Mafi did an exceptional job at making it clear the history of the complex world。 Not to mention this is one of the first YA fantasy novels I have read that combines romance, court and political intrigue and magic all into one plot。 tFinally, the romance。 It was superior。 I will label this a lowborn enemy-to-lovers。 However there were several twists throughout I didn’t see coming, and with the expansion of this series, the current love path could easily change (although I’m praying it doesn’t)。 The love interest, Kamran, is the typical broody, angsty, crown prince of every fantasy lover's dreams。 However, Tahereh Mafi ended on a criminal-worthy cliffhanger, and I seriously do not know how I will manage to wait for the next book in this series。 I loved it so much I wish I could give it a 10/5 but since that’s not possible, I give you a 5/5。 。。。more

Oh my god? This was so good? I loved Shatter Me as a teenager but am not a fan as an adult, and I've had very different opinions on each of Mafi's contemporary novels。 THIS? Was exactly what I knew that she could deliver and I LOVED IT。The writing in this struck a perfect balance between whimsical/lyrical and clear/concise, I found myself reading 50 pages of this at a time and then putting it down because I really wanted to savour the setting。 Speaking of setting, this book is actually very wint Oh my god? But I was so immersed that I really didn't mind。Finally, I was so confused when I read this because my e-galley said 333 pages, but it was taking me way longer than usual! Turns out it's over 500 pages LOL。 。。。more

This book is just so well crafted。 The language/word choice is fantastic。 The world is so interesting, along with the politics。 The characters are top notch。 I am very impressed。 I can't believe how long I am about to have to wait for the sequel。 I adore the enemies to lovers vibes in here。 I really did picture Kamran as a Darkling type for awhile but by the end, I realized he ain't so bad。 But he has an edgy side that I think we might get to see in a bad way in the future。 I really loved these This book is just so well crafted。 The language/word choice is fantastic。 The world is so interesting, along with the politics。 The characters are top notch。 I am very impressed。 I can't believe how long I am about to have to wait for the sequel。 I adore the enemies to lovers vibes in here。 I really did picture Kamran as a Darkling type for awhile but by the end, I realized he ain't so bad。 But he has an edgy side that I think we might get to see in a bad way in the future。 I really loved these characters and I need to know what happens to them。 。。。more

This is an AMAZING start to a new fantasy YA series by the incomparable Tahereh Mafi。 I can not WAIT for book two。 Love the world she created for it, love the forbidden love and the strong female lead。

I always loved Tahereh's writing, she makes me deeply feel together with the books' emotions。 Even if I miss ''hatter me' lyrical writing, she is still very good。I didn't care for any main characters in the book because of all them were too good, too kind for me to care。 However, the romance from two MC's was a cherry on top for me as Romeo and Juliet romance lover。I am interested to see more about Hazan character, as well as one particular character who appeared at the end。 I always loved Tahereh's writing, she makes me deeply feel together with the books' emotions。 Even if I miss ''hatter me' lyrical writing, she is still very good。I didn't care for any main characters in the book because of all them were too good, too kind for me to care。 However, the romance from two MC's was a cherry on top for me as Romeo and Juliet romance lover。I am interested to see more about Hazan character, as well as one particular character who appeared at the end。 。。。more

The premise of this book was so interesting。 I loved the mythology and lore of this world。 I wish we had spent a little less time in the characters' heads because the action and outer conflicts were so interesting。 However, they would be broken up by pages and pages of thoughts and inner monologue from Alizeh or Kamran。 This is fine at first when we're getting to know them, but I think their actions spoke loud enough that not all of the inner monologue was needed。 However, because this is the first book in a series, I know that everything was set up spectacularly for the next book。 The ending made it all worth it for me。 Knowing Mafi, the next book will take this series to a whole new level, and I cannot wait to see what she does next, especially after that ending!!! 🤯Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins for the ARC in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

I read nearly 500 pages in 5 days- which is no easy feat for me after long days at work。 I really enjoyed this book。 I found myself dying to know more about every single character。 The world created was lovely but never overly complicated, so it was easy to understand and accept。 Alizeh was both fierce and fragile, which gave her so much more depth and interest。 Kamran was angry dark boy and who doesn’t love that?! Some things that stopped this from being a 5 star read: the writing was beautiful, but things were repeated over and over, as if the reader had forgotten things in just a page or two。 It made things feel tedious and drawn out for no reason。 Also, just personally, it bothered me how often Alizeh sort of gave up or was sad because no one had come and saved her。 As if she couldn’t save herself???? I’m hoping Alizeh will realize in the next book the power she possesses。 Lastly, I felt like Alizeh was sometimes so naive。 Yes, I know she’s young, but her character is made out to be extremely worldly and knowledgeable, yet she is unable to see things for what they are so often。 Overall, totally worth the read and I’m gonna be impatiently waiting for the next book in this series! 。。。more

Wow I don’t even know where to start with this book。 It was incredible。 Tahereh Mafi “shattered” all of my expectations with this book。 I knew she was a strong writer from her Shatter Me series but this is something else。 For a YA book it has plenty of detailed descriptions and vocabulary。 It follows Alizeh, who is a long lost heir to the throne of an ancient Jinn kingdom。 She is forced to hide as a servant because of who she is。 It also follows Kamran, who is a prince grappling with his role i Wow I don’t even know where to start with this book。 It was incredible。 Tahereh Mafi “shattered” all of my expectations with this book。 I knew she was a strong writer from her Shatter Me series but this is something else。 For a YA book it has plenty of detailed descriptions and vocabulary。 It follows Alizeh, who is a long lost heir to the throne of an ancient Jinn kingdom。 She is forced to hide as a servant because of who she is。 It also follows Kamran, who is a prince grappling with his role in his kingdom。 The two of their lives are intertwined in ways you will soon discover if you choose to read this book。Writing This book is filled with beautiful descriptions of people, places and things。 Tahereh Mafi manages to make the simplest things seem wonderful。 Her incorporation of character development, plot and world building all at once, was very well done。 It is very tricky to create a balance between those three things。 However, she always does a good job。 Her writing pulled me into each chapter in way that I couldn’t resist the urge to continue。Characters The characters in this book! They are incredibly well developed。 Alizeh was a very easy character for me to like。 She is a strong, brave, kind, and powerful young woman。 She wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself when she deemed it necessary。 She also has plenty of compassion in a world that does not reciprocate that。 Kamran was another great main character。 He has many things he struggles with and is thrown a lot of new information to make sense of。 Throughout the book he shows himself to be an inquisitive person and a deep thinker。 All the characters in the book played an important role whether that role be small or large。Plot This book was much more plot driven than I had originally anticipated。 There were plenty of ups and downs and twists and turns which were really well done。 It had me freaking out multiple times。 At first it doesn’t seem like much is happening, but once it starts, it starts。 I need to know what happens in the next book。Engagement I had no trouble with the level of engagement while reading this book。 In fact, I could barely put it down。 It was your classic, eyes glued to the page, bringing the book with me everywhere I go, and neglecting all responsibilities to continue reading。 This book really earned its place in the fantasy world。 It is one of the best I have read in quite a while。Overall Overall I think this book is 100% worth picking up for a read。 It is truly an experience。 Tahereh! My heart hurts! The world, the characters, every aspect of this book is amazing。 You can also see some social commentary filter throughout the book so look out for that。 I loved this book!!! I am still reeling from all the emotions I am feeling。Thank you to the team at HarperCollins Canada for providing me with an ARC of this book! 。。。more

I think that’s mostly a personal issue, but it just really threw me out of the story every time it happened。 Overall though, I really didn’t want to put the book down to do actual life things because I needed to know what was going to happen。 And that ending REALLY left me desperate for the next book! I don’t know how long I’m going to have to wait, but it will definitely not be patiently。 Highly recommend this one, and thanks so so much to HarperCollins Canada for the advance reader copy! 。。。more

In terms of the plot, I can't even begin to tell you what transpired between the pages of this book。 When I tell you I gasped and screamed on chapter twenty-three… Although this book starts off slow, there is so much going on。 Alizeh is constantly battling to keep her identity hidden while trying to stay off the King's radar。 Not to mention the whispers of the devil that tell her the future。 Kamran also learns more about himself as the story progresses。 He is a bit of a romantic, and definitely has the 'I hate everyone but her' air about him。 I just can't get enough of these characters and this world。 The political intrigue is so compelling! I can't believe I got to read one of my most anticipated books early and it's now one of the best books of the year!!Thank you so much to the publishers for an arc to review! Couple names are not my strong suit), and I will immediately die on the spot upon seeing any illustration of them, no questions asked。 The plot of this unravels in the most gorgeous way。 A lot of what's great about this book has to do with how truly stunning the writing is, and the plot of course benefits from that as well。 Everything just flows so beautifully, from Alizeh's encounter at the start of the book that sets the book into motion, to Kamran's quiet discoveries, to the very last page。 The world within is so gorgeous, inspired by Islamic and Iranian cultures, as well as Shahnameh, an epic poem written by the esteemed Persian poet Ferdowsi。 This book is truly steeped in culture, and it's so, so stunning。 The world is expertly built, the magic within is beautiful and easy to follow。 Overall this book is absolutely stunning and I cannot wait to shout about it forever。 It's a must read if you love fantasy, and I can say with confidence that this will be one of my favourite reads of the year。 If you've loved series such as The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh, The Gilded Wolves and The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi, I think you'll love this as it is similarly rich in culture and writing style。 The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by VE Schwab, The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, and Lost in the Never Woods by Aiden Thomas have similar writing, all more gradual paced fantasy。 An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir, The Cruel Prince by Holly Black, A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A。 Brown, and Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer have similar political intrigue and epicness。 。。。more

I was so excited to be approved for this title。 I dived right into the story and what I found made me super sad。 The story is told in dual POVs and its just boring。 I was almost 50% in before I just had to give up。 I understand that this is only a book one but I was so bored out of my mind。 The two POVs you have one from the prince who thinks the girl is a spy。 Then the girl who is a Jinn is just trying to survive。 Both POVs felt like two separate stories and neither of them was really all that I was so excited to be approved for this title。 I dived right into the story and what I found made me super sad。 The story is told in dual POVs and its just boring。 I was almost 50% in before I just had to give up。 I understand that this is only a book one but I was so bored out of my mind。 The two POVs you have one from the prince who thinks the girl is a spy。 Then the girl who is a Jinn is just trying to survive。 Both POVs felt like two separate stories and neither of them was really all that good。 I have loved Mafi's Shatter Me series but it just seems the last few books she has written just haven't messed with me at all。 I thought that this one being fantasy would be a hit but it just didn't work out。 Those who stated that this was An Ember in the Ashes are so wrong。 Where Ember was dark and well paced this one was light and super slow。 It did have its moments but it just wasn't enough。 。。。more

Why?To me it seemed excessive。•The pacing…was not smooth。 It dragged for me till page 100, and then again after 150 until page 246 and then again at page 340。It was all over the place。。•The only thing giving this book 4 stars for me is a character I met in the last 20% of the book。Morally grey, but I am intrigued!Alizeh - I cannot wait for her to SHINE!!I will keep up with the series because I Adore Tahereh, but this one was just not it for me…•3。75 star read and only because of the beautiful writing…。 。。。more

Kamran was a sympathetic character as well; although he was a prince and well-off, he still had so many problems that can't be solved by money。 We don't get to see them interact much until the halfway point, but when they did? *Chef's kiss* After reaching the end, I'm anxious to see how their relationship will play out。 (view spoiler)[ Is Kamran the next Adam? Is Cyrus the next Warner?!?! I'm stressed。 (hide spoiler)]The world building here was incredible。 Learning about the myth of the Jinn and Persian mythology was fascinating。 Tahereh Mafi described the sights and sounds so vividly that I felt like I was right there with Alizeh。 The plot was so interesting and seeing everything come together at the end was wonderful。 The world created in this story is amazing, and I can't wait for the next book!Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy。 。。。more

OHMYFGODS—the ending still has mewowowowow, where do i start?!this was my first book by TM and boy, oh, boy it did not disappoint。 "This was impossible。Not only impossible, it was dangerous。 Ruinous。 Not merely for themselves—but for the realms they occupied。 Their lives were pitted against each other。 He had a kingdom to one day rule, and she had her own life to pursue。 Any other avenue would lead only to chaos。" loved everything about this book。first off, the prose is absolutely beau OHMYFGODS—the ending still has mewowowowow, where do i start?!this was my first book by TM and boy, oh, boy it did not disappoint。 "This was impossible。Not only impossible, it was dangerous。 Ruinous。 Not merely for themselves—but for the realms they occupied。 Their lives were pitted against each other。 He had a kingdom to one day rule, and she had her own life to pursue。 Any other avenue would lead only to chaos。" loved everything about this book。first off, the prose is absolutely beautiful and just perfect, i can only compare it to poetry。the world-building was on point, the characters absolutely amazing, the twists jaw dropping, the romance - to die for。 "Will you not tell me your name?" he asked。She shook her head, the movement slow, uncertain。 Kamran felt paralyzed。 He could not explain it; his body seemed anchored to hers。 He drew closer by micrometers, propelled to do so by a force he could not hope to understand。 What mere minutes ago might've struck him as lunacy now seemed to him essential: to know what it might be like to hold her, to breathe in the scent of her skin, to press his lips to her neck。 He was scarcely aware of himself when he touched her—light as air, faint as fading memory—a stroke of his fingers against her lips。She vanished。" [can't tell you how many times i've reread this, and how i screamed the first time i read it]i'd say that this first book is more character driven but who the MCs are - their personalities, secrets, talents - is an extremely important part of the plot, and they are well fleshed-out and developed。 i love both MCs with undying passion。just because we focus more on the characters doesn't mean that the plot is non-existent, exactly the opposite - the plot happening in the background is extremely interesting, intricate and important。almost every chapter made me feel the spectrum of emotions。it's just such an amazing book i literally cannot recommend it enough and i'm already screaming at my friends to pre-order, i need everyone to read This Woven Kingdomit's a physical torture to wait for the next book after the way this one ended and honestly i'm still not okayeternal gratitude to NetGalley, HarperCollins Children's Books, HarperCollins for the ARCall quotes are from an advance copy and may differ in the final publication 。。。more
